Germany is seeking to establish an EU-wide migrant sharing mechanism in a bid to check the flow of Ukrainian refugees, Die Welt has reported, citing an Interior Ministry spokesperson. The media outlet suggested that the considerably higher number of Ukrainians heading to Germany owes in part to the generous benefits provided to newcomers in the country.According to data from the EU’s statistical agency, Eurostat, which Die Welt cited in its latest report, as of March 2024 approximately 1.3 million Ukrainian refugees were residing in Germany. Poland has the next highest amount at 960,000, followed by the Czech Republic with an estimated 360,000. Numbers in other member states are far lower, the media outlet pointed out. It also alleged that while the number of Ukrainian nationals in Poland has been steadily decreasing recently, the corresponding figure in neighboring Germany has risen. In its article on Friday, Die Welt quoted an Interior Ministry representative as saying that Germany “strongly supports a solidarity distribution [mechanism] for refugees and believes that [the issue] of secondary migration within the EU should be addressed and resolved in particular.”Ukrainian nationals are currently free to choose their destination within the EU, and can apply for asylum in one nation and then relocate to another later.

Elon Musk recently doubled-down on his predictions that humans would need a “universal high income” in the wake of artificial intelligence-driven job displacement. This time claiming that without our jobs our purpose in life may eventually be to “give AI meaning.”The bleak prognostication from the world’s richest person came during the VivaTech 2024 event in Paris as part of a winding speech wherein Musk made fervent claims that AI would provide all of our goods and services in the future.“My biggest fear is AI,” the mogul said.He also claimed that AI will be better than humans at everything, thus relegating our species to doing our best to support the machines:“The question will really be one of meaning – if the computer and robots can do everything better than you, does your life have meaning? I do think there's perhaps still a role for humans in this – in that we may give AI meaning.”

Millions of migrants, most seeking asylum, have crossed the border in recent years and have been allowed to settle in the U.S. until a federal immigration judge decides their fate, a process that can take years. Among the record numbers, federal data suggest, are as many as one million children who have arrived with their families or on their own since 2021.They are settling in cities and entering public schools around the U.S., adding financial and logistical strains in communities where they have arrived in large numbers. Districts are faced with the need for additional teachers and staff who can teach English and space for new students, often while waiting for promised supplemental federal or state funding. There were recently more than 500 English learners in Stoughton schools, double the number from three years ago. The increase was fueled partly by 90 students, ranging from kindergarten to high school, placed by the state in two nearby hotels serving as homeless shelters. Many are from recently arrived Haitian migrant families.Adding the 90 shelter students has cost Stoughton, which teaches a total of 3,740 students, at least $500,000 for increased staff and busing costs. The state said it has reimbursed nearly all of that money. But the lag time and uncertainty about how much would be paid back has challenged the district’s ability to plan, said Joseph Baeta, Stoughton’s superintendent.
