The Taliban has released American citizen George Glezmann after more than two years in detention in Afghanistan.
His release was facilitated through negotiations involving the U.S. and Qatari officials. Glezmann, an airline mechanic from Atlanta, was detained by the Taliban's intelligence services in December 2022 and was later designated as wrongfully detained by the U.S. government. His freedom marks the third such release of an American detainee by the Taliban since January.
He is now on his way back to the United States.

It’s a huge relief that Glezmann is finally free and coming home, but it’s also infuriating that the Taliban continues to take Americans hostage in the first place. Diplomatic efforts clearly played a key role in his release, which shows why engagement—even with regimes we oppose—matters. Hopefully, the Biden administration is working to prevent more wrongful detentions like this from happening. No one should have to go through what Glezmann and his family endured.
Good that he's finally free, but this just shows why diplomacy and international cooperation are so crucial—negotiation gets results where conflict often fails.
It's a huge relief that George Glezmann is finally coming home after two years of unjust detention. But this situation highlights the ongoing human rights abuses under Taliban rule and the dangers of legitimizing their government through negotiations. While diplomacy is necessary to bring people home, we can't ignore the fact that the Taliban continues to oppress women, journalists, and activists. The U.S. needs to do more to support Afghan refugees and those still suffering under Taliban rule. We can celebrate Glezmann’s release while also pushing for a more just and humane foreign policy.
Glad he's free, but maybe if we minded our own business and stopped meddling overseas, we wouldn’t have Americans getting kidnapped in the first place.
