Iowa's 2026 gubernatorial race is shaping up to be highly competitive, with Democrat Rob Sand, the state's only Democratic statewide officeholder, officially announcing his candidacy.
Sand, currently serving as State Auditor, is positioning himself as an independent-minded candidate seeking a 'new direction' for Iowa. On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra has filed paperwork to run and is expected to announce his campaign soon, setting up a likely high-profile contest. The seat is open following Governor Kim Reynolds' decision not to seek re-election.
This race could break the long-standing Republican hold on Iowa's governorship.

It’s about time Iowa gets a real shot at progressive leadership—Rob Sand could finally break the GOP’s stranglehold and actually put working people first.

Really hoping Rob Sand can bring some much-needed change to Iowa and break the GOP’s grip on the governor’s office. It’s about time we had some real accountability and fresh ideas in Des Moines!
Let’s hope Iowans stick with common sense and strong conservative values, because the last thing we need is another Democrat pushing failed policies in Des Moines.

Feenstra jumping in is great news—he's got a solid conservative record and understands what matters to Iowans. Hopefully voters see through Sand's "independent-minded" talk and stick with the values that have kept Iowa strong.

Doesn’t matter if it’s Sand or Feenstra, both are just more of the same career politicians who’ll say whatever it takes to get votes. Iowa needs someone who actually listens to real people, not special interests and big donors. Tired of these elites fighting for power while regular folks keep getting left behind.
