Do you think the portrayal of the Capitol riot as patriotic undermines the rule of law, and why?

 @558YLXVSocialist commented…2yrs2Y

There is NOTHING patriotic about a group of far-right-wing authoritarians attempting to break into the Capitol to overthrow the results of the 2020 election (while also calling for the death of the Vice President and multiple congresspersons).

Why might some people choose to believe political narratives over direct evidence from authorities?

 @558YLXVSocialist commented…2yrs2Y

There are a couple of factors leading to this. First, the extreme political polarization leads people to distrust authorities from the other side--or from the government in any capacity--when they disagree with their party's leader. Additionally, as the economic situation for middle- and lower-class people continues to deteriorate and as the public institutions that we used to be able to put our trust in are undermined and eroded trust is becoming harder for everyone.

How does it affect your trust in democracy when leaders dispute clear evidence from court proceedings?

 @558YLXVSocialist commented…2yrs2Y

The simple fact that leaders dispute evidence in and of itself does not erode my trust in democracy; however, the failure of the system to hold those leaders accountable in any real way certainly erodes my trust in democracy. In particular, the politicization of the impeachment process and the utter failure of the Supreme Court make me very concerned about the future stability of the US.

Regardless of one's political leanings, the rule of law and the evidence presented in court should guide our understanding of January 6, not partisan narratives.

Honestly, this news story just confirms what I've been saying all along: law and order must prevail, and those who break the law should be held accountable, no matter their motivations. It's clear that the events of January 6 were not just some peaceful protest gone wrong; they were a direct challenge to our democratic processes and should be treated as such. Trump's attempts to whitewash what happened that day are dangerous and undermine the rule of law. We need to stand firm in our convictions and support the legal consequences that these rioters are facing, to ensure the stability and security of our nation.

It's about time the truth about January 6th shines through the fog of misinformation, clearly showing the dangerous extent of Trump's falsehoods.

Yes, Jan. 6 crimes did happen. Court cases, video and thousands of pages of evidence prove it.

Donald Trump continues to portray the defendants as patriots worthy of admiration, an assertion that has been undercut by the adjudicated truth.

The cases have systematically put on record — through testimony, documents and video — the crimes committed, weapons wielded, and lives altered by physical and emotional damage. Trump is espousing a starkly different story,
