Former President Barack Obama has praised Harvard University for refusing to comply with demands from the Trump administration that critics say would limit academic freedom and diversity initiatives. The Trump administration froze $2.2 billion in federal funding to Harvard over the university's stance on antisemitism and campus activism. Harvard has vowed to resist what it calls political overreach, drawing support from public figures including Obama and Senator Bernie Sanders. The move is being seen as a significant stand for institutional independence in the face of federal pressure. Supporters argue that Harvard is setting a national example for defending academic values.
Good on Harvard for standing up to this kind of authoritarian nonsense. Universities should be places for open dialogue and critical thinking, not political pawns for whoever’s in power. It’s refreshing to see Obama and Bernie backing academic freedom and pushing back against this overreach. We need more institutions willing to stand their ground for equity, diversity, and free expression.
