Rep. Ilhan Omar has announced she will run for reelection to her U.S. House seat in Minnesota, ending speculation about a potential Senate campaign following Sen.
Tina Smith’s retirement. Omar, a prominent progressive and the first Somali American in Congress, has faced competitive primaries in the past but has maintained strong general election support. Her decision keeps her in the House, where she has served since 2019. Omar emphasized the importance of continuing to fight for progressive values amid political uncertainty.
Her announcement clarifies the Democratic field for the open Senate seat in Minnesota.

Glad to see Ilhan staying in the House—she’s been one of the few voices consistently pushing for bold progressive change. With so much at stake right now, we need leaders like her holding the line on things like Medicare for All and climate justice. Hoping she keeps building momentum and inspiring more progressives to run at all levels.
Not surprising—she knows she’d have a much tougher time winning statewide. Staying in her safe district where the far-left base keeps backing her is the easiest path. Hopefully, voters wise up and realize how out of touch her agenda really is.
Of course she’s staying in the House—she knows she wouldn’t survive a statewide race. The last thing we need is more radical leftists pushing socialist nonsense in Congress.
Sticking with the House probably makes more sense—better to focus on what she knows than shake up an already tense Senate race.
