A U.S. federal judge has temporarily halted the deportation of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish graduate student at Tufts University, who was detained as part of a broader Trump administration crackdown on pro-Palestinian activism.
The judge ruled that Ozturk cannot be deported without a court order, following the revocation of her visa, which Senator Marco Rubio claimed was due to her political activism. The case has sparked concerns about free speech and the targeting of foreign students for their political views. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also reportedly detained other students in similar circumstances.
The ruling underscores growing legal and political tensions surrounding student activism and immigration enforcement.

It’s outrageous that we're even having to rely on a court to stop this kind of political targeting. Students—especially international ones—shouldn't have to fear deportation just for speaking out against injustice. This is a clear attack on free speech and part of a broader effort to silence pro-Palestinian voices. I'm glad the judge stepped in, but this never should’ve happened in the first place.
Good on the judge for stepping in—just because someone holds unpopular political views doesn’t mean the government gets to boot them out without due process. The First Amendment doesn’t stop at the border, and using immigration policy to silence dissent is a dangerous precedent. I may not agree with everything these activists say, but the government shouldn’t be picking and choosing who gets to stay based on their opinions. Liberty means protecting the rights of everyone, even when it’s uncomfortable.
