Jailing a sick old man for speaking his mind just shows how little authoritarian regimes care about liberty or basic human dignity.

Algeria has every right to defend its national unity—foreign interference and colonial nostalgia from France have no place here.

Authoritarian crackdowns like this are exactly why open markets and liberal democracy need to be part of any serious foreign policy conversation—Algeria's just shooting itself in the foot.

This is a blatant attack on free speech and a disturbing example of authoritarian overreach. Jailing an 80-year-old cancer-stricken writer for expressing his views is not just cruel, it’s a clear sign of how fragile the Algerian regime feels about dissent. France absolutely should be pressuring Algeria on this, not just for Sansal’s sake but to stand up for democratic values. It’s 2024—no one should be thrown in prison for words.
