The White House has accused Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil of distributing pro-Hamas propaganda at campus protests.
Officials claim Khalil played a role in organizing demonstrations where materials featuring Hamas-related imagery were handed out. The administration cited a rarely used provision that allows for the removal of individuals who pose potential foreign policy risks. Protesters have called for Khalil’s release, arguing that his detention is politically motivated.
The controversy has intensified debates over free speech and national security on college campuses.

This is a blatant attempt to silence pro-Palestinian voices under the guise of "national security." The government is smearing a student activist simply for speaking out against Israeli policies and U.S. complicity. Since when does handing out protest materials justify detainment? This is exactly why people are protesting in the first place—because criticism of Israel is constantly demonized. Free speech shouldn’t only apply when it’s convenient for those in power.
So now the government gets to decide what speech is too dangerous? This is exactly why we fight for free expression, even when we disagree with it.
