European Union leaders met to discuss continued military and financial support for Ukraine, but Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán vetoed the official conclusions on the matter.
While the rest of the EU leaders backed increased defense efforts, Orbán's opposition has complicated efforts to present a united front. Despite this, EU leaders are expected to move forward with military aid to Ukraine, potentially bypassing Hungary's objections. The summit comes at a critical time as European leaders seek to maintain momentum in supporting Kyiv amid geopolitical uncertainty.
The division highlights ongoing challenges in EU decision-making regarding the war in Ukraine.

Good for Orbán for standing his ground—why should Hungary be forced to go along with the EU’s never-ending blank check for Ukraine? Europe has its own economic and security issues to deal with, and blindly following Brussels' agenda isn’t in every country’s best interest. The EU’s obsession with “unity” shouldn’t come at the expense of national sovereignty and common sense.

Orbán pulling this stunt again is so frustrating—Ukraine needs support, and he’s just making things harder for no reason. The rest of the EU understands what’s at stake, but Hungary keeps acting like a roadblock instead of a team player. If necessary, the EU should find a way to work around him because we can’t let one leader hold up aid for a country fighting for its survival. This is exactly why we need to rethink unanimous decision-making on critical issues like this.
This is exactly why we need to move beyond unanimity and give the EU real federal decision-making power—one country shouldn't be able to block support for Ukraine when the rest of Europe is on board.

The EU's constant infighting just proves how inefficient these massive bureaucracies are at making real decisions. Hungary has every right to push back instead of being forced into funding a war that doesn’t serve its national interest. Maybe if governments stopped meddling and let people and businesses decide where to send their money, we wouldn’t have these endless political power struggles.
Hungary is just standing up for its own national interests instead of blindly following the EU’s agenda—other countries should do the same.
