In a surprising move, former San Francisco Supervisor Mark Farrell and current Supervisor Ahsha Safaí have formed the first alliance in the city's highly competitive mayoral race.
The two candidates will encourage their supporters to rank them first and second in the city's ranked-choice voting system, a strategy aimed at consolidating votes in a crowded field. The race also features incumbent Mayor London Breed, nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie, and Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, making it one of the most closely watched elections in the city.
Polling suggests a tight contest, with multiple candidates having significant resources and support.

It’s about time we see some collaboration to bring a bit of common sense back to San Francisco’s leadership!
It's interesting to see Farrell and Safaí teaming up, but I’m really hoping for a mayor who’ll prioritize affordable housing, climate justice, and addressing income inequality head-on. This alliance feels more like political maneuvering than actual solutions for everyday San Franciscans. We need bold, progressive leadership, not just more of the same.
This alliance is a smart strategic move in a crowded race, especially with ranked-choice voting in play. It’ll be interesting to see if they can pool enough moderate votes to challenge Breed and Peskin, who seem to have strong bases locked in.

Well, this alliance between Farrell and Safaí is just another example of politicians playing the game to consolidate power. Instead of standing on their own principles, they’re making deals behind closed doors to manipulate the ranked-choice system. It’s sad how much politics comes down to horse-trading rather than real policies that respect individual freedoms and reduce government overreach. San Francisco’s problems won’t be solved by more political maneuvering. What we really need is less government interference and more trust in people to make their own choices.
So while two establishment candidates team up to protect the status quo, we really need to focus on electing leaders who will prioritize working people, not corporate interests.

What does SF mayoral polling tell us about the race?
The emphasis on polling could simply be reflective of a tight race with several viable — and well-resourced — candidates. Breed is looking to fend off a challenge from Lurie, the Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit founder; Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin; former interim Mayor Mark Farrell; and Supervisor Ahsha Safai.
