Could holding parents responsible lead to better parenting and safer communities, or does it risk unfairly punishing families?

 @9LFYMGSfrom Maine  answered…2yrs2Y

In this specific case, the parents knew he had access to a gun and should have checked his bag when they had a meeting in school hours before the shooting. This headline is misleading and provocative. The Crumbly's are responsible for their criminal actions and they knew it as they ran and hid from authorities after the shooting. They had also bought the gun for him. - A Michigan High School Student near Oxford, Michigan.

The issue of widely available firearms goes beyond the scope of the parents. In this case, the family did fail to properly ensure their child did not have a gun, but the fact that guns are so widely available and easy to purchase goes beyond the control of the parents. This is an issue that requires direct government restriction, not punishment for parents who may or may not be aware that their children have access to a firearm.

I wonder why? unless they gave the shooter the gun illegally I dont see why

As parents do have duty of supervision over their children, they should be held responsible as well. This should create more awareness and show how important it is to properly raise a child and what happens when failing to do so, or using their children to comit certain crimes to keep themselves from a sentece.

they should not suffer for their child’s actions as the child are just mental

How does the idea of punishing parents for their child's actions align or conflict with your views on individual responsibility?

 @9LFYX7Lfrom Maine  answered…2yrs2Y

Individual responsibility depends on age of course. A child or a minor may not be able or fit to decide on certain things. This is when their parents got the responsiblility to carry. This resonsibility comes with an amount of rules and repercussions to keep in mind.

I agree that the owner of the gun as long with the child should be punished. If their gun they should have handled it correctly and the child should be punished for their actions.

 @ISIDEWITHasked…2yrs2Y

Do you believe parents should be held legally accountable for the crimes their children commit, and why or why not?

 @9LG28KV  from Tennessee  answered…2yrs2Y

No. The only way parents can control a child's behavior is to have the child's respect. Anyone that has ever witnessed an out of control teenager knows this. If the child is not able to respect their parents then they will have to answer to a higher authority (i.e., the judicial system in this case). Parents absolutely have certain responsibilities in raising a child, but anyone who thinks "it takes a village" to raise a child must also agree that if the parents can't control a child then the village must step in. My guess is (and I'm probably in the minority…  Read more

This sentencing is a stark reminder of how crucial it is for parents to be vigilant about their children's access to firearms. It's heartbreaking that it takes such a tragedy for us to confront the realities of gun violence and the responsibilities that come with gun ownership. I truly hope this case sparks a serious conversation about implementing stricter gun control laws and ensuring that firearms are kept out of reach of those who should not have them. It's a step in the right direction, but there's still so much more to be done to prevent future tragedies like this.

 @HarmoniousJusticeAuthoritarian from Texas  commented…2yrs2Y

Finally, some sense of accountability is being established with this sentencing. It's about time parents are held responsible for their blatant negligence, especially when it has such deadly consequences. This case sets a vital precedent that will hopefully deter similar tragedies in the future by ensuring firearms are kept out of reach of those who shouldn't have them.
