Redirect parts of the police budget to social and community based programs

 @PuzzledBaboon from Florida  disagreed…2yrs2Y

While it's true that social and community-based programs can have a profound, positive impact, we also need to remember the vital role that police departments play in maintaining law and order. For instance, in New York City, significant budget cuts led to a stark rise in crime rates in 2020. Perhaps a better solution might involve a precise audit of police funds to ensure they're used more efficiently.

 @9D9LW8F from Missouri  answered…2yrs2Y

the police department should get money according to there community reports and legit arrest records. not by what they say they need.

 @85QWNPG from Colorado  answered…3yrs3Y

No, the problem of US police force is not the amount of investment but rather the unfair encentives for stops, searches and jailings, private prisons and lack of training of which can all be fixed by both more oversight, accountability and a balance of the spending in current budgetary finances.

 @9Y83RBQSocialist from Connecticut  answered…6mos6MO

Only funding for military grade weapons for the police force should be reduced or eliminated and redirected to social and community based programs, but we need police and they should be adequately funded. We should also move towards a more active presence of police on foot, bicycles or other means that allow them to connect with community members.

 @9XLX9W7 from Wisconsin  answered…6mos6MO

Police departments aren't the problem the problem is that there are some inherently racist police and over-policing of lower-income neighborhoods that give law enforcement a bad rap. Funds should be reallocated to filtering biased policing.

 @9XGKGC5 from Connecticut  answered…6mos6MO

It should be equally distributed between local police departments and social community based programs.

 @9X4ZPYG from North Carolina  answered…7mos7MO

I believe we should keep the local police department funding the same but invest in community based responders for non-violent issues.

 @9WTFGR7 from Wisconsin  answered…7mos7MO

No, but they should recieve much better training and individual officers should face much harsher punishments for their actions.

 @9VSY5Q6 from Washington  answered…7mos7MO

No, but police departments need to be restructured and mental health calls should be responded to by mental health experts.

 @9V8DFWQ from California  answered…8mos8MO

Funding should remain the same. There should however be less police officers, and the funds used to employ the remaining officers should better spent in greatly improved training programs.

 @9TN4XG8 from Connecticut  answered…8mos8MO

We should fund police to a degree, but put criminals convicted of drug related crimes in rehabilitation centers or reformity clinics provided by people who care about the community.

 @9SKMQ2Q from Oklahoma  answered…9mos9MO

no, increase funding and pay better wages to officers of the law. I believe that this could help stop the issues within police forces.

 @9S6DHV6 from Texas  answered…9mos9MO

They should change their hiring process and have a serious output on who they hire to the police force

 @9RMFT58Independent from Florida  answered…10mos10MO

No, but police should have to take wellness tests to prove they are fit to serve their communities and are not too aggressive.

 @9QZFHPT from Maryland  answered…10mos10MO

Keep money the same but redirect money towards body cams and training cops to handle their emotions better and weed out all the bigotry in the police force. Restructure the police the way the major of DC has been.

 @9MBVGV3Women’s Equality from North Carolina  answered…1yr1Y

It depends on the area and if we change how our police handle certain situations. it also depends on if we figure out a way to decrease violent crime in the United States.

 @9LLZ22C from Texas  answered…1yr1Y

Use the funding to incorporate more training for police in mental health cases. There should be a separate department that is armed, but trained to handle cases where mental health is involved.

 @9LH68JF from Missouri  answered…1yr1Y

I believe that police departments that aren't necessarily in dire need of money then they shouldn't receive additional funding but the funding should instead go towards programs to help and enrich the youth.

 @9LGM5XM from Kansas  answered…1yr1Y

I think all of these are very drastic ideas. Instead, reform the police departments and be more willing to punish corrupt cops who do cruel things with their power to create a less corrupt system.

 @9L7LQBRIndependent from New Jersey  answered…1yr1Y

They should divert police funding to fire departments and other emergency services that are comparably very underfunded

 @9KYC5JP from Colorado  answered…1yr1Y

Yes, but not to the point where it decreases the effectiveness of the police to a noticeable degree.

 @9KVLRPV  from New Jersey  answered…1yr1Y

Largely dependent on the local community. Higher crime areas should focus on traditional police force.

 @9KJ222R from Texas  answered…1yr1Y

In less crime-ridden areas, definitely decrease the funding, but in high crime areas, keep as is. However, regardless of location, increase funding and minimum requirements for police training, as a lot of issues with corruption in the police force tends to be due to the haphazard hiring of those who care more for the power involved with the job and less so about actually protecting the peace of the people.

 @9KH2QNF from Tennessee  answered…1yr1Y

No, Police should require stricter training and psychological testing and higher education in political science as well as annual retest similar to how lawyers keep their licenses.

 @9KGSSYG from California  answered…1yr1Y

No, police need to be retrained to reduce levels of hostility towards minority races and LGBTQ+ individuals.

 @9KFTJND from California  answered…1yr1Y

keep it the same but make it so they need to go through more training and test to prove they don't have a racial bias

  @DazhaDamnItPeace and Freedom  from Massachusetts  answered…1yr1Y

No, but they should have a specially trained unit of unarmed community-based responders for non-violent calls.

 @9JYTZXT  from New York  answered…1yr1Y

I believe a set amount of funding for the police should be set towards public security. This may be a little dystopian but I believe just simple people with security training patrolling certain neighborhood with high crime rates could significantly lower those very crime rates.

 @9JVGN6C from South Carolina  answered…1yr1Y

police just need more training becuase th US has the lowest training time out of all other countries

 @9JK4ZNF from Texas  answered…1yr1Y

Redirect police funding to community programs and higher training standards for police. Eliminate private companies which provide training to police departments and train officers on de-escalation.

 @8DZCSNH  from Indiana  answered…1yr1Y

Increase training nut don't increase funding and add more funds to social & community based programs

 @9HPXP2Z from Missouri  answered…1yr1Y

police should be for civil matters, domestic terrorism or armed crimes should fall on the national guard

 @9HCJ4BQ from Florida  answered…1yr1Y

No, increase officer training hours and training budgets. Include racial acceptance training, and extensive psychological testing to ensure mental stability.

 @9H9P7N5Socialist from Oregon  answered…1yr1Y

Require 4 year degrees for LEO, 2 year POST with an emphases on de-escalation techniques. Take 1/3 of police funding to create mental health teams to deal with mental health issues.

 @9H4PCF6answered…1yr1Y

They should both be equally funded, as the police are intended to keep us safe and community based programs help the community.

 @9GYCVCM from North Carolina  answered…1yr1Y

I believe we should redirect existing police funding to training and high-crime communities however I also believe in more social and community based program funding.

 @9GXKBT6Transhumanist from Arkansas  answered…2yrs2Y

My stance on this is nuanced because there is a lot of legitimate danger and criminality in the world, and the police need money in order to have what they need to protect the larger society. However, I also understand that the wealthy use the police as their army and that LGBTQ+ and racial minorities experience a disproportionate number of arrests and violations of their rights. I think that some of the money should be redirected but not too much and the money that is taken should fund science-based organizations.

 @9GJ4CTS from California  answered…2yrs2Y

A portion should go to community based programs as there is no real information on how the training would improve the police then when they were first trained.

 @9GBZ9B6 from Virginia  answered…2yrs2Y

I think we should focus on helping both sides. The police are important, and so is our community. more police should be held accountable for how well they do their jobs, and how they discriminate against others.

 @9GB5G83 from Michigan  answered…2yrs2Y

I think some of the funding not all of it could be used for social and community based programs and the police could even help out.

 @9G7LZXD from Texas  answered…2yrs2Y

No, but increase implicit bias training, require police to live in the communities they serve, and replace some police officers with concealed-carrying social workers to de-escalate situations. Social and community based programs should definitely be funded more.

 @9FVZDVC from Colorado  answered…2yrs2Y

No, but create mandatory therapy appointments for officers, frequent evaluations by community and committee, and restricted gun access.

 @9FT2Z6Q from Utah  answered…2yrs2Y

I think we should increase funding for police departments towards implicit bias training and require more training in general.

 @9FSZMRH from Iowa  answered…2yrs2Y

I think that police funds should be put to better use than they are. Like better training and more advanced equipment.

 @9FM8WKYanswered…2yrs2Y

What I think needs to be done is KCPD needs to get crucified for all of the awful things that they are getting away with.

 @9DWCNX2 from California  answered…2yrs2Y

The funds should be spilt accordingly between the three. With more money being directed to social and community based programs, more funding towards these programs will uplift more people. Poverty tends to correlate with crimes, less poverty means less crimes and less crimes mean lesser need for police.

 @9D9BS9T from New York  answered…2yrs2Y

An adequate amount should be redistributed to community based programs and there should be special units who use guns

 @9FQG6WC from Illinois  answered…2yrs2Y

The funding should be split between social communities and the Police Department.

 @9LNTTKZIndependent from Texas  answered…1yr1Y

Yes, depending on whether or not the area has a high rate of crime in which both social and community programs should be boosted as well as police department funding.
