In August 2017, President Trump sent a memo to the U.S. Department of Defense which requested that all openly transgender individuals be removed from the military. The White House memo also asked Department of Defense to ban transgender individuals from entering the military and directed them to stop paying for all medical treatments related to transition-specific medical care. A 2016 report which was commissioned by the Pentagon found that there are approximately 1,320 to 6,600 active transgender service members. The report also estimated that transgender-specific military care would cost the military $2 million - $8 million a year.
