American doctors are trapped in Gaza as a result of Israel’s post-invasion closure of the Rafah border crossing into Egypt, according to sources with knowledge of the plight of two ill-fated medical missions.Relatives of the doctors were told by the State Department that rescue efforts were underway, including through coordination with the United Nations and the Israel Defense Forces. Yet on Monday, the Israeli military fired on a United Nations vehicle that was traveling to the European Hospital in Khan Younis, near Rafah, killing a U.N. employee and injuring another.The doctors are rationing water and at least one physician is in poor health and is on an IV drip to combat dehydration. The doctors are part of two medical missions, one of which was organized by FAJR Scientific, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It was not immediately clear which organization set up the second mission.The Intercept asked about the stranded doctors during the State Department’s daily briefing on Monday. “We’re aware of these reports of U.S. citizen doctors and medical professionals currently unable to leave Gaza,” said spokesperson Vedant Patel. “We don’t control this border crossing and this is an incredibly complex situation that has very serious implications for the safety and security of U.S. citizens. But we’re continuing to work around the clock with the government of Israel and with the government of Egypt to work on this issue.”Patel added, “Rafah is a conduit for the safe departure of foreign nationals, which is why we continue to want to see it get opened as swiftly as possible.”

A jury was being chosen for a murder trial nearly three decades ago in California. The state was seeking a death sentence for Ernest Dykes, who had been charged with killing a 9-year-old boy during a robbery in Oakland.Weighing who should be struck from the jury pool and who should be kept, a prosecutor made notes about a prospective juror:“I liked him better than any other Jew but no way.”Other notes about prospective jurors bore evidence of similar prejudice:“Banker. Jew?” read one.“Jew? Yes,” read another.An inquiry, which may involve as many as 35 cases from as far back as 1977, is just getting underway. But the district attorney’s office says it has already found evidence that the discriminatory practice was widespread for decades and involved numerous prosecutors.

Guided-missile destroyer USS Carney (DDG-64) returned from a historic deployment to the Middle East, the Navy offered new insights into the warship’s engagements with the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.Over the course of about six months on station in the Red Sea region, Carney’s crew destroyed 65 Houthi targets launched from Yemen and on the ground there, according to the Navy.The Carney had “51 engagements” with the Houthis, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, said during a speech welcoming the ship back to the U.S. last week.The Navy release further stated Carney “successfully destroyed 45 Houthi-launched weapons, including land attack cruise missiles, anti-ship ballistic missiles, and unmanned systems.” In addition, the ship “conducted two defensive strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, destroying 20 targets.” It is unclear what happened in the six engagements against Houthi-launched targets that did not result in destruction.

The U.S. Air Force has decided not to repair a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber after an emergency landing in 2022The news of striking one of the precious B-2s from its fleet comes as the Air Force continues to move toward fielding its new B-21 Raider stealth bombers as replacements for its existing B-2s, as well as its supersonic swing-wing B-1 bombers.Details about the Air Force's decision to get rid of the damaged B-2, which is set to formally happen sometime in the next year or so, were included in an annual force structure report that the Pentagon released in April.Aviation Week was among the first to report on this development. There are currently just 20 B-2s in the service's inventory, including the damaged one.
