A jury was being chosen for a murder trial nearly three decades ago in California. The state was seeking a death sentence for Ernest Dykes, who had been charged with killing a 9-year-old boy during a robbery in Oakland.Weighing who should be struck from the jury pool and who should be kept, a prosecutor made notes about a prospective juror:“I liked him better than any other Jew but no way.”Other notes about prospective jurors bore evidence of similar prejudice:“Banker. Jew?” read one.“Jew? Yes,” read another.An inquiry, which may involve as many as 35 cases from as far back as 1977, is just getting underway. But the district attorney’s office says it has already found evidence that the discriminatory practice was widespread for decades and involved numerous prosecutors.

Guided-missile destroyer USS Carney (DDG-64) returned from a historic deployment to the Middle East, the Navy offered new insights into the warship’s engagements with the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.Over the course of about six months on station in the Red Sea region, Carney’s crew destroyed 65 Houthi targets launched from Yemen and on the ground there, according to the Navy.The Carney had “51 engagements” with the Houthis, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, said during a speech welcoming the ship back to the U.S. last week.The Navy release further stated Carney “successfully destroyed 45 Houthi-launched weapons, including land attack cruise missiles, anti-ship ballistic missiles, and unmanned systems.” In addition, the ship “conducted two defensive strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, destroying 20 targets.” It is unclear what happened in the six engagements against Houthi-launched targets that did not result in destruction.

The U.S. Air Force has decided not to repair a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber after an emergency landing in 2022The news of striking one of the precious B-2s from its fleet comes as the Air Force continues to move toward fielding its new B-21 Raider stealth bombers as replacements for its existing B-2s, as well as its supersonic swing-wing B-1 bombers.Details about the Air Force's decision to get rid of the damaged B-2, which is set to formally happen sometime in the next year or so, were included in an annual force structure report that the Pentagon released in April.Aviation Week was among the first to report on this development. There are currently just 20 B-2s in the service's inventory, including the damaged one.

A Texas nonprofit that recently hired a Biden transition official got a contract worth as much as $530 million to help manage the influx of migrant children at the southern border, Axios has learned.The contract is by far the largest ever awarded to Family Endeavors. It's potentially worth more than 12 times the group's most recently reported annual budget — a sign of the demand the new work will place on its operations.The no-bid contract also is the second largest ever awarded by the agency overseeing the migrant child program.The award comes as the Biden administration rushes to deal with an influx of migrants at the border, including more than 21,000 unaccompanied minors currently in government custody, according to the latest data.Family Endeavors won the contract just months after it hired Andrew Lorenzen-Strait as its senior director for migrant services and federal affairs.
