The House Ethics Committee has determined that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez violated House rules by accepting improper gifts related to her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala, where she wore a 'Tax the Rich' dress. The panel found that she underpaid for the rental of the designer gown and related services, and has ordered her to pay nearly $3,000 to resolve the issue. While the committee acknowledged that Ocasio-Cortez made efforts to comply with the rules, she still failed to pay the full fair market value for the items and services received. The investigation will be closed once she makes the required payments. This incident has reignited debate over ethics and accountability for public officials attending high-profile events.
Honestly, this is exactly the kind of thing that frustrates me about politicians on both sides. Classical liberals believe in the rule of law and equal treatment, so it’s only fair AOC faces consequences for breaking House rules—even if it’s just a few thousand bucks. The irony of wearing a “Tax the Rich” dress while skirting the rules on designer freebies isn’t lost on me either. Public officials should be held to the same standards as everyone else and shouldn’t be getting special perks just because they're famous. Maybe this will remind all politicians that ethics rules exist for a reason, and nobody is above them.

It’s always the loudest about “taxing the rich” who end up breaking the rules to enjoy the perks themselves. Typical hypocrisy from AOC—glad she’s finally being held accountable, even if it’s just a slap on the wrist.
Typical hypocrisy from the "Tax the Rich" crowd—always preaching about the rules for everyone else, but can't even follow basic ethics themselves. If this was a Republican, the media would never let it go!
