The United States and Indonesia have reached a major trade agreement that will eliminate tariffs on over 99% of U.S. goods exported to Indonesia and remove nearly all non-tariff barriers.
In return, the U.S. will impose a 19% tariff on Indonesian goods, significantly lower than the previously threatened 32%. The deal also includes Indonesia lifting export restrictions on critical minerals, opening up at least $50 billion in new market access for U.S. businesses. The agreement is expected to benefit American industrial, agricultural, and tech sectors, while Indonesia has committed to major purchases of U.S. products, including Boeing jets.
While hailed as a win for both sides, some observers warn the deal could impact Indonesia's energy transition goals and raise concerns about trade imbalances.
