Oregon Governor Tina Kotek is urging lawmakers to divert $1 billion from the state's unique 'kicker' tax rebate to fund wildfire prevention and firefighting efforts.
The kicker, which returns excess tax revenue to residents, is expected to total $1.7 billion next year. If approved, this would be the first time since 1991 that the rebate is withheld for another purpose. Kotek and some legislators argue that the move is necessary to address escalating wildfire costs and protect communities.
The proposal is currently under consideration by the Oregon Legislature.

Taking $1 billion from the kicker rebate just sets a bad precedent—Oregonians deserve to get their money back when the government over-collects, not have it rerouted every time a new spending idea pops up. If wildfire funding is really a priority, the state should tighten its belt elsewhere instead of raiding taxpayer refunds.

Honestly, investing that kicker money in wildfire prevention is just common sense—what good is a tax rebate if our homes and communities are literally at risk of burning down every summer?

Here we go again—politicians just can't resist grabbing more of our money, even when there's a law meant to give it back. If they were actually responsible with our tax dollars in the first place, maybe we wouldn't be in this mess.
