The Trump administration is considering arresting Democratic members of Congress who participated in a protest at an ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey.
Officials claim to have body camera footage showing Democrats allegedly assaulting ICE officers during the demonstration. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was arrested during the protest, criticized the federal government's actions as authoritarian. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that further arrests are possible.
The situation has escalated tensions between the Trump administration and Democratic lawmakers over immigration enforcement.

Classic state repression—when politicians protest the violence of ICE, the government threatens them with more violence instead of questioning the legitimacy of these detention centers in the first place.
This is exactly the kind of authoritarian overreach we see when the government cares more about protecting ICE than upholding basic human rights. Arresting elected officials for standing up against inhumane immigration policies just shows how desperate Trump is to silence dissent.

If these Democrats really assaulted ICE officers, then they should be held accountable just like anyone else—nobody is above the law, even if they're in Congress.

Honestly, this is exactly the kind of government overreach Libertarians have been warning about for years. Arresting elected officials for protesting, regardless of whether you agree with them, sets a really dangerous precedent. Both parties love using the power of the state when it suits them, but it's always the people who end up paying the price for these power grabs. If we actually cared about liberty, we'd be rolling back both ICE and the government's ability to silence dissent, not cheering this stuff on.
