I appreciate the humility Pope Francis showed in his choice of burial, but I do hope Catholics remember the deeper traditions of the Church as well. While modesty is a virtue, there’s something powerful about the beauty and reverence of our historical papal tombs that point to the sacredness of the office. I worry sometimes that in trying to be “accessible,” we lose sight of the dignity of the papacy and the importance of tradition. Funny how even the "humble" tombs of popes still become shrines for worship—guess the Church never misses a chance to turn a simple grave into a spectacle.

It's kind of ironic how the Church puts on a show of humility while sitting on centuries of wealth and power. A plain tomb doesn’t change the fact that the Vatican’s riches come from exploiting the working class.

Since his burial, Roman Catholic faithfuls have begun visiting his tomb, filing past the simple white tomb in St Mary Major Basilica a day after he was bade farewell by a crowd of hundreds of thousands. A single white rose was placed on the tomb that said 'Franciscus' – the Pope’s name in Latin.
