I appreciate the humility Pope Francis showed in his choice of burial, but I do hope Catholics remember the deeper traditions of the Church as well. While modesty is a virtue, there’s something powerful about the beauty and reverence of our historical papal tombs that point to the sacredness of the office. I worry sometimes that in trying to be “accessible,” we lose sight of the dignity of the papacy and the importance of tradition. Still, I respect that thousands are coming to pay their respects; it shows how much he touched people’s hearts. I just hope future popes don’t feel pressured to do away with all ceremony and grandeur, which have always pointed us to the glory of God rather than man. Humility and reverence should go hand in hand, not one at the expense of the other. May Pope Francis rest in peace, and may the Church continue to balance simplicity with the beauty of her traditions.
