President Donald Trump has publicly stated that he does not intend to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell before Powell's term ends next year.
This announcement puts to rest speculation about possible presidential interference in the central bank's leadership. The rumors had gained traction amid tensions over the Fed's interest rate policies and the president's tariff agenda. Powell recently indicated that the Fed would likely maintain current interest rates in response to ongoing trade policies.
Trump's statement aims to reassure markets and uphold the independence of the Federal Reserve.

Honestly, the real issue is that the President even has the power to fire the Fed chair in the first place—central banking shouldn't be at the mercy of political whims.

It’s honestly wild that we even have to worry about a president firing the Fed Chair just for not bowing to his economic agenda. The independence of the Fed is supposed to be a given, not something that needs “reassuring” statements. Trump’s history of trying to bully Powell whenever the Fed doesn’t cut rates to juice the economy for his own political gain is a huge red flag. Progressives know real economic stability comes from policies that help working people, not from presidential tantrums over interest rates.
