Storm Nuria has triggered a rare red weather alert across parts of the Canary Islands, particularly affecting La Palma with winds exceeding 80mph (130 km/h) and intense rainfall.
The Spanish weather agency AEMET has warned of 'extraordinary danger' as the storm is expected to last for around 12 hours. Tourists and residents have been urged to take precautions as the storm could cause significant disruption. The eastern half of La Palma is expected to be hit hardest, with up to 30mm of rain falling in just one hour.
The red alert is in effect until at least 5pm on Thursday.
