Storm Nuria batters Canary Islands with rare red alert issued for 80mph winds

Storm Nuria is set to hit popular tourist hotspots on April 3, prompting weather experts to warn people people of the dangers they may face.

The Spanish Weather Agency AEMET said strong winds exceeding 80mph (130 km/h) are expected to hit La Palma at around 5am.

They may cause "extraordinary danger" and is likely to last 12 hours.
