Glad to see these brave women being recognized, but I always get a little skeptical when the government throws these kinds of ceremonies. While honoring courage is great, it feels a bit performative coming from the State Department, which isn't exactly innocent when it comes to global meddling. Melania’s message about love and courage was nice, but I’d rather see our government stop interfering in other countries so people don’t have to be that courageous in the first place. It’s also hard to ignore how these awards can be used to justify foreign policy goals under the guise of promoting human rights. That said, I’ve got nothing but respect for the honorees themselves—they’ve clearly been through hell and stood tall. Just wish our politicians would stop using their stories to score points.
