It’s honestly wild that in 2024 we’re still arguing over whether new moms should be allowed basic parental leave—even in Congress. This resistance feels less about “tradition” and more about clinging to outdated power structures that don’t support working parents. If we want a government that truly reflects the people, we need to make space for lawmakers to be both parents and public servants. The double standard here is glaring and just reinforces how much work still needs to be done on gender equity.

Honestly, Congress should be able to make their own rules as long as they’re not infringing on anyone’s rights—if they want to vote by proxy for parental leave, that’s their business. The real issue is how much power these people have over our lives in the first place. Maybe if government wasn’t so bloated, we wouldn’t care how or when they vote.
