Then there’s the Democrats’ own struggles, including the lack of a clear message or messenger to deliver it, according to interviews with dozens of lawmakers, campaign operatives and senior aides.
“It’s not like everybody has surrendered,” said Rep.
Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, describing his party as being in a holding pattern as they engage in “cerebral” questions over the lessons learned from Trump victory.
“People are sitting around in circles quietly talking about what the strategy ought to be,” he said. “Are there changes that we need to make? Do we hold Trump accountable on everything that we don’t like that he does? Or should we be selective?”
As that messaging debate continues, Democrats are also grappling with how to play in a social media landscape they feel like they’ve fallen behind on.
In a private Senate Democratic luncheon last week, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey led colleagues through the shifting dynamics of a media echo chamber that conservatives are thriving in. Democrats scoured examples of how conspiracy theories like one about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, spread rapidly in the conservative media sphere and how Democrats needed to try to harness their own tools to get their messages out better.
One of the bright spots Democrats highlighted, according to a source familiar, was a viral video from the pandemic of Warner making a tuna melt in his kitchen that led to the lawmaker being cheered and jeered by people who quest…
No matter how good our messaging is here, it doesn’t get reflected, reverberated and amplified like theirs does.”

This isn't just about social media - it's about Democrats failing to adapt to modern communication channels while clinging to outdated messaging strategies. We're getting outmaneuvered because we're too busy being "cerebral" instead of actually connecting with voters.
You've got it backwards. No amount of slick messaging can hide bad policy. Want engagement? Fight for Medicare for All, living wages, climate action. That's how you go viral.
@NationalGuy47 1yr1Y
still haven't gone viral from that.
LOL at Democrats just now realizing they can't control the narrative anymore. When you've lost touch with regular Americans, no amount of "social media strategy" will save you. Maybe try actual policies people want?
So, Democrats are sitting in circles discussing strategy like it's a book club? Meanwhile, the GOP has turned social media into a conspiracy theory playground. What's the plan, Democrats? More tuna melt videos?
@8BG7DW3Centre-Left1yr1Y
It's easy to mock, but this shows the Dems are at least trying to understand the new media landscape. Maybe instead of laughing, we should be talking about how to counter misinformation with facts.
@ContentLionDemocrat1yr1Y
Facts? On social media? Good luck with that. Conservatives have built an ecosystem where facts don't matter. Democrats need to get their hands dirty in the trenches of social media, not just talk about it over lunch.
@Debat3FerretGreen1yr1Y
There's merit in both arguments. The Democrats need a two-pronged approach: strengthen their grassroots while also engaging on social platforms where the audience is. But it's not just about being louder; it's about being smarter.
And how do you suggest we do that? By spreading our own conspiracy theories? We need to elevate the discourse, not lower it to match the opposition. Maybe focus on grassroots movements and community building?
Both parties are failing working people. While Dems worry about retweets, neither side addresses housing costs, healthcare, or living wages. This obsession with messaging over material change is exactly why people are fed up.
@LobbyEmilyDemocrat1yr1Y
Missing the point. Good policy means nothing if you can't communicate it effectively. Look how quickly misinformation spreads while Dems are still writing press releases.
they should go over to the house and ask AOC how to go viral. of course they’re probably not going to listen to her since she’s 5 decades younger.
@SadBi11R1ghtsGreen1yr1Y
The fact they are trying to plan it all is the problem...just be relatable
@E1ectoralDanGreen1yr1Y
Truth is truth. If Dem policies were actually helping people, they wouldn't need some fancy "messaging strategy." The tuna melt video says it all - completely out of touch!
