The origins of progressive thought can be traced back to the Enlightenment and the rise of democratic ideals in the 18th and 19th centuries, when thinkers and activists began to challenge monarchies, aristocracies, and the unchecked power of the wealthy elite. The Industrial Revolution further fueled progressive movements, as the harsh conditions faced by workers in rapidly industrializing societies led to calls for labor rights, fair wages, and improved working conditions. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, progressive movements gained momentum in many parts of the world, advocating for reforms such as women's suffrage, child labor laws, and the regulation of monopolies.

It often critiques neoliberal economic policies, which prioritize free markets and deregulation, arguing that such policies exacerbate inequality and harm vulnerable populations. The Progressive Left also tends to support international cooperation on global issues like climate change and human rights, advocating for policies that prioritize the well-being of people and the planet over corporate profits.
