Portland City Council is signaling its intent to end a key homelessness services agreement with Multnomah County, a move that has sparked mixed reactions from county officials and service providers.
The agreement, which funds numerous nonprofits working to address homelessness, requires a 90-day wind-down period before it is officially voided. The decision comes just weeks before a new mayor and expanded city council take office, leaving the future of the partnership uncertain. County leaders have expressed disappointment, while some service providers fear the loss of critical funding.
The new city government will have the opportunity to either renegotiate or reinstate the agreement.

This is super frustrating. Instead of working together to solve the homelessness crisis, the city and county are just playing politics and putting vulnerable people at risk. We need more collaboration and stable funding for these services, not less. I really hope the new city council steps up and fixes this mess.

Honestly, good on the City Council for rethinking this partnership. Throwing more money at the homeless issue through these government-run programs clearly hasn’t been working. It's time to give local communities and private organizations more freedom to solve problems without all the bureaucratic waste. Letting the city and county keep butting heads won’t fix anything. We need to focus on solutions that empower individuals, not just funneling more tax dollars into inefficient systems.
