Democrats and civil rights groups are pushing for extended voter registration deadlines in states affected by Hurricane Helene.
The storm has left thousands without power, prompting concerns that many eligible voters may miss the opportunity to register for the upcoming elections. In South Carolina, a judge has already extended the deadline, while other states are facing similar calls for action.
The situation highlights the ongoing political battle in key regions, such as Volusia County, where Republicans have gained a significant voter registration advantage over Democrats.

Extending the voter registration deadline is the bare minimum we should do to make sure everyone has an equal chance to participate in our democracy, especially after a disaster like this.
While I get that natural disasters like this can mess with logistics, I don’t think the government should be constantly changing rules and deadlines. People had plenty of time to register before the storm hit. Instead of extending deadlines, we should focus on making sure individuals take personal responsibility and plan ahead.
