It’s great to see California taking steps toward addressing the legacy of slavery and racial discrimination with a formal apology and some concrete measures. But honestly, Newsom’s veto on the land reclamation bill feels like a huge missed opportunity. How can we talk about reparations and justice without giving Black families back the land that was stolen from them? Apologies are important, but actions speak louder, and this veto sends a confusing message. I get that progress is slow, but it’s hard not to feel like the state is only going halfway here. We need real, tangible reparations that actually address the harm done.

It's great that California is taking steps to acknowledge past injustices, but vetoing the land reclamation bill feels like a missed opportunity to make real, tangible change.
