For two decades, Vice President Harris has opposed the death penalty. Now her campaign is declining to say whether she'd fight to end it as president.
Harris and her team have dodged questions about what she believes on several policy fronts as she's changed some of the liberal positions she's held.
In a shift, the Democratic Party changed its official platform this summer to remove opposition to the death penalty, which a small majority of Americans support.
The party's platforms in 2016 and 2020 had called for ending capital punishment.
Here are the top political news stories for today.
She’s not dodging. She just doesn’t want to talk to the press.
She's dodging. She doesn't want to talk to anyone.

She has dodged the entire media. The only questions she has taken have been scripted and from very friendly journalists that support her.

Biden ran into this exact problem. He campaigned on ending the federal death penalty, and then when he got into office, he realized that Robert Bowers, the Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooter, was about to be tried for capital crimes. So, in that situation, should he drop the charges against Bowers? Would that be popular?

I’m not Biden, and I understand the political ramifications of a move like that, but I support commuting all death sentences to life in prison w/out parole. I don’t believe a developed nation like the US should sanction death as a punishment, it hasn’t been a deterrent to crime.
Republicans WANT YOU to live virtuously and force your 12 year old to give birth but when it comes to saving a person on death row all of a sudden their virtue goes straight out the window.

Correct, she's remaining vague on an issue in an effort to not alienate voters. This is a purely political move to further hedge her chances of winning the 2024 presidential election.
