New Jersey Gov.
Phil Murphy (D) announced Wednesday the state would cancel $100 million in medical debt for nearly 50,000 residents.
“Medical debt can follow someone for decades.
We are wiping the slate clean for thousands and making a real impact on their lives,” Murphy posted on the social platform X.
Nearly 18,000 New Jersey residents owned $61.6 million to Prime Healthcare hospitals, and more than 31,000 people owed more than $38.4 million to other providers like collections agencies, according to the nonprofit.
“When someone is sick or injured, they should be able to focus on what matters most — getting better — rather than worrying about how they will pay for the life-saving care and services rendered to them,” Murphy said in a statement.

Are you getting the $$$ back from the hospitals, MDs and nurses? Or are you just paying it off with other people’s taxes?

That's how it works in every developed country.

How about, and hear me out here, the U.S government STOPS SPENDING MONEY THEY DON´T HAVE!!! Debt would not be such an issue if the government just stopped paying for meaningless things we don´t need yet/ever. I know that´s not the point of this question but I am heated about this topic.
I'm so glad to hear that. Obviously you must be voting Republican, since the Democrats have led the most shocking and unprecedented expansion of debt, spending, and inflation in the history of the United States, from the Green New Scam to the Inflation Hiking Act to the Ukraine Aid Bill to the "Infrastructure" Omnibus that paid for all kinds of crap besides roads & bridges. I'm glad to see that you are a conservative.
Debt cannot be canceled, only transferred.
This is a headline trying to fool stupid people.
Since debt is contractual how are they doing this?
Are you cancelling contracts?
Or are you using taxpayer money to pay the debt?
You can't "cancel" debt. You can only force someone else to pay for it – in this case hundreds of thousands of innocent taxpayers.
