Today it's closer to 80. Of the first 10 justices only 2 stayed on the court longer than 14 years. If they knew then that people would routinely live to 80+ and that they would stay on the court until death, they most assuredly would have added term limits to their tenure.

Life expectancy is a weird number. It includes child mortality. But as soon as you pass the age or 15, you're basically set for 70s, even centuries ago. Especially when you're talking about easy jobs like being a politician or judge.
