Yes, but if there is a population that speaks another language and makes up more than 20%, it is also worth recognizing their language as one of the official ones

 @9YMPRYKDemocrat from Washington  answered…6mos6MO

Yes, but they should not be mad if there is something the immigrant is not understanding or learning correctly.

 @9YH4KVSDemocrat from New Jersey  answered…6mos6MO

ESL should be a mandaotry course taken by immigrant students, not because its what they "should" be speaking, but to give them an advantage when talking to U.S. Citizens

 @9X2QSJ6Democrat from Illinois  answered…6mos6MO

We should have them have access to free diverse learning and free English courses, but still be able to speak their native language.

 @9WMBHSKDemocrat from Louisiana  answered…7mos7MO

I am neutral on this argument, this should be a choice as a free country. Immigrants should have the option to learn, or if not to learn be provided with translated official documents into their language.

 @9TKNVGZDemocrat from Kentucky  answered…8mos8MO

Not a requirement but highly suggested. The government should offer some free basic English courses for those who would like them.

 @7PTCG38Democrat  from Wisconsin  answered…8mos8MO

Yes, as a requirement of assimilation into American culture and values. The government should provide free language learning courses

 @9SP4HPXDemocrat from Missouri  answered…9mos9MO

it depends on where they are. for example in a english heavy job, but if they are in a place with a lot of other people that speak their language then they should be fine

 @9QYZX2KDemocrat from Indiana  answered…10mos10MO

No, the United States has no National Language. The need to assimilate will drive those whom look for higher successes in this country.

 @9MLHYRXDemocrat  from New York  answered…12mos12MO

They shouldn't be required to learn English but for their own sake it would be useful to learn it so ultimately its their choice

 @9L62ZHGDemocrat from Texas  answered…1yr1Y

No, but there should be a government-provided free language learning course for any that WANT to learn english.

 @9L59GY7Democrat from Pennsylvania  answered…1yr1Y

yes, because lets face it, we need to be able to communicate with each other effectively. English is the most used language. If it were spanish id say we all need to learn spanish.

 @9K99V29  from Florida  answered…1yr1Y

No, although a basic knowledge of English should be encouraged (and provided), we should embrace the diversity that immigrants add to our country

 @9H9VJXLDemocrat from Pennsylvania  answered…1yr1Y

Yes. Of course we should not be saying “English is our country’s language.”It is not. However, English is necessary for so many other things. I feel the same way about US citizens living in another country learning the most used languages. We can’t expect to live somewhere and have no ability to to speak to most people in that country.

 @9GX62WVDemocrat from North Carolina  answered…1yr1Y

Not required specifically, but it should be encouraged and the government should offer free language-learning courses

 @9JJCNR3Democrat from Florida  answered…1yr1Y

No, they are protected in their right to speak whatever language they want by the First amendment. But there should be heavy encouragement to learn English.

 @9JHQ93X from Indiana  answered…1yr1Y

No, but the government should provide language courses, as it is important to know enough english for basic communication.

 @9J6FMX3Democrat from Nevada  answered…1yr1Y

I think they should for their own good. It is incredibly difficult to live properly without speaking English in the states. However I do think it should be required that government provide english classes to assist them.

 @9J5BMTDDemocrat from Illinois  answered…1yr1Y

I don't think it should be required, but I do believe that there should be an easier, cheaper way available to help them learn.

They can, but why would they come into our country, where most speak English, and they do not?
