Should medical marijuana be legalized as a therapy to treat or alleviate symptoms of disease?

The 2014 Florida Right to Medical Marijuana Initiative would legalize the medical use of marijuana for individuals with debilitating diseases diagnosed by a licensed Florida physician. The measure is receiving wide support in early polls, including 70% of registered Republicans and 88% of registered Democrats. Opponents, including Governor Rick Scott say the ballot initiative is too vague and would allow almost anyone to access marijuana. Proponents point to other successful medical marijuana programs in other states and cite the many scientific benefits of marijuana in treating serious illnesses.

American teacher detained in Russia ‘left behind again’

A landmark prisoner exchange on Thursday brought home from Russia journalist Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan, among others, but the family of imprisoned American teacher Marc Fogel was not celebrating. Once again, they learned, he had not been included.“Today, Marc was left behind again,” Fogel’s wife and sons said in a statement urging the Biden administration to prioritize his release. “Marc has been unjustly detained for far too long and must be prioritized in any swap negotiations with Russia, regardless of his level of notoriety or celebrity.”Fogel, 63, was detained by Russian officials in August 2021 and charged with smuggling into the country a small amount of medical marijuana, which was prescribed in the United States for back pain but is banned in Russia. A Pittsburgh-area native, he was a teacher at the Anglo-American School of Moscow and spent 27 years teaching overseas in places such as Oman, Venezuela and Malaysia. He is serving a 14-year sentence, during which he has been teaching English to prisoners.He is among several Americans who remain in Russia, a list that includes Gordon Black, a U.S. soldier convicted of threatening his Russian girlfriend; Ksenia Karelina, a dual U.S.-Russian citizen and aesthetician who was accused of donating $51.80 to a Ukrainian charity; and Michael Travis Leake, an American expatriate and musician who was convicted on drug charges.

Israel Sinks Syria's Navy

Israel said Tuesday that it had destroyed Syria’s navy in overnight airstrikes, as it continued to pound targets in Syria despite warnings that its operations there could ignite new conflict and jeopardize the transition of power to an interim government.Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, said that the Israeli military had “destroyed Syria’s navy overnight, and with great success.” His remarks appeared to confirm Israel’s responsibility for the destruction documented in the Syrian port city of Latakia, where photos showed the smoldering remains of ships sunk at their dock.Mr. Katz said that Israel’s military “has been operating in Syria in recent days to hit and destroy strategic capabilities that pose a threat to Israel,” although he did not indicate what new or immediate risk Syria’s navy presented to Israel, which has the most powerful military in the Middle East.Israeli warplanes have conducted hundreds of strikes in Syria since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday, according to war monitors. CEO Shooting Suspect Had Manifesto That Criticized Healthcare Companies

A man is being held for questioning in connection with last week’s killing of a health insurance executive in Midtown Manhattan, the police said.The man being questioned was identified as Luigi Mangione, 26, the police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, said at a news briefing. He was identified in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., after an employee recognized him and called the authorities at about 9:15 a.m. on Monday.Mr. Mangione was carrying identification with his name on it, along with fake I.D., according to law enforcement officials.Mr. Mangione showed the police the same fake New Jersey identification that the man believed to be the gunman presented when he checked into a hostel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Nov. 24, a senior law enforcement official saidWhen Mr. Mangione was approached in Altoona, he had a gun, a silencer and other false identification cards similar to those they believe the killer used in New York, according to one of the law enforcement officials and a person briefed on the investigation.
