Labor unions represent workers in many industries in the United States. Their role is to bargain over wages, benefits, working conditions for their membership. Larger unions also typically engage in lobbying activities and electioneering at the state and federal level.

These active users have achieved a basic understanding of terms and definitions related to the topic of Labor Unions
Even if they hurt the economy in the sense of making corporations pay more, worker’s right matter more
Help, except in the case of some unions where the people working need to be held publicly accountable, like the police union and occasionally teacher's union
The purpose of labor unions is not to help the economy, it's to help workers.
I don’t really care because their primary purpose is to help the worker not “the economy” whatever that really means
Help, they provide more benefits, higher wages, and job security, and they help increase wages at non-union businesses as well
Help, but public unions should be barred from political activity for any level of government they are involved and government should be barred from mandating union membership for any person.
@9MXV7HQPeace and Freedom12mos12MO
Every worker should have a choice between joining or no joining unions and not be forced to join and pay for it and ban their ability to make political donations
Help, studies show that unions not only increase the benefits and pay of union members but also increase benefits and pay of non-union members by forcing other employers to keep up via competition.
They help the working class, but hurt the rich businesses. For the most part, it is hurtful, when you think about it.
Help, and the government should subsidize them and make them mandatory for any corporation with more than 50 employees
Hurt in the short term, but necessary to preserve worker’s rights
Hurt, but they should be allowed because they help individuals; people should come before the economy
healthy, happy, well-paid workers might hurt the profits of their employers in the short term but long-term it will be less cost on social services like healthcare
Help, but the unions ultimate goal should be to help the workers take control over the workplace
aiutare, e il loro potere contrattuale dovrebbe essere nettamente superiore a quello delle aziende
Only help. Together we bargain, divided we beg.
I don't really have an opinion about it.
I believe that a union could hurt and help the economy. If in a work environment and you work full time while giving you lower pay is bad, and with the economy rising no one is able to afford or pay anything. But the bad thing is it would leave many businesses to run down and people would be unemployed.
Help, in theory but have recently had their powers limited and are not nearly as effective as they once were
Help, but workers or unions owning enterprises will be more helpful
Help, they provide a voice for labor forces and an opportunity for fairness against large corporations whose interests are profit and not their workera
Worker co ops need to become more of a thing. The benefits of unionization are there within co ops without the potential to corrupt or lobby.
Help, although their primary purpose is to protect laborer welfare and interests
help but the power should be returned to the people in the unions not the people running the unions
Help, but workers seizing the means of production is more helpful
Please elaborate on this question.
I believe Labor unions are neccesary for people to express their opinion on the work place and to voice their concers
I don't think we should care as much about the economy as we should the workers well-being
It could help but it could also hurt
Unions give workers the representation and rights they deserve, regardless of their economic impact.
Still assessing. Campaigns should be publicly funded. No interest group should have supremacy advantages
Help, I would prefer socialism to a capitalist system without unions.
Helps to some extent. I think they are necessary especially when injustice is practiced in a company however since they are only for the workers, they will be a huge problem for some good companies so I think they help but they don't need more power.
Yes, every damn worker should be union, every single one #onebigunion
Theoretically they hurt the economy, but hurting the economy is not synonymous with going against the public good
I do not think they necessarily help the economy however, we need them to protect the employees.
Although labor unions might not help the economy; they are essential to help workers fight for fair wages, benefits, and good working conditions.
Help and protect them from terrorism stealing pension money.
Help; provided their power is limited to ensuring high standards of working conditions, employee compensation, training, & benefits and that unions are held accountable for how funds are used, respect for non-union workers, & advancing modernization.
Help, in theory, but they are so weak and corrupt that they do nothing.
Hurt, but the government should actively negotiate on the workers behalf every two years for a salary increase
Labor Unions help our economy, they are the only thing giving power to employees of a company to ensure that they get the fruits of their hard work and labor. Without unions a 40 hour work week would never have existed.
Help, and should be given significantly more power
Don't do either, but help the people.
Help, and incentivize more unions and workplace democracy
Not really sure, depends on the situation
Help, and increase labor power by passing the PRO act with no restrictions.
Regardless, labor unions are necessary to protect worker's rights.
I'm Neutral but I think it depends on what they are doing to hurt or help the economy
Help, it protects people, and those people are then able to contribute more to the economy
don't necessarily help the economy but help the workers
Help, and increase power of unions by reminding workers that they have the right to unionize and punish any business that threatens these rights
@7WDP6PTIndependent4yrs4Y
Help, it allows the workers to untie against oppression of their employer and demand equal rights
Help, workers deserve a voice in their work and this is the closest we can get in our current situation
Both, the system is abused.
Help they help stop company's from abusing their employees.
Hurt, but increase the quality of life for workers
If they hurt or help the economy is irrelevant, they help ensure workers/employees rights and that is good.
Help, we must unionize more sectors and encourage workers to join unions.
Help, they give workers better safety, pay, and rights
Help in most cases but can easily become corrupt if membership is mandatory
Help, but the current unions are corrupt and should be replaced by unions operated by committees of rank-and-file workers
Labor unions ensure that workers are not being abused or exploited by their workplace, thy are essential.
@adh12345677Socialist5yrs5Y
They help but police unions should be dissolved.
The question is flawed. Unions don’t help the economy, but they help the actual people working.
I don't have an oppinion
Help, The only way workers will ever remove their chains is by organizing together.
Help, except for a few exceptions. Police unions are a prime example of an union corruptly using their power to reinforce a white-supremacist status quo instead of enforcing an equal public good.
Help, In theory, but they have become corrupt and participation should not be mandatory.
Help, but instituting workers' councils as the basis of society would be better
Help, Unions and collective bargaining were instrumental in building the American middle class
They help the worker invariably, but that hurts the "economy" under a capitalist model, because workers having any form of power allows for less exploitation by corporations and less profit made off of the back of the worker who remains unrewarded.
Regardless, I think workers should own the means of production in all cases.
They are both helpful and hurt.
Help, but trade specific unions are too scattered and weak to be truly effective at their goal. We need industry-specific unions (like construction, healthcare, energy, transportation, service, etc.) to keep corporate greed in check and ensure that workers have adequate wages to take care of themselves and their families, and then they can have enough to spend on other goods and services.
Help the economy, and Labor unions are important to protecting workers rights
Help, since workers are people too, and can be more productive if there is an assured sense of gathering in the workplace.
Any union is better than no union, but business unions pose little threat to capital and solidarity unionism is considerably more effective
Hurt, but the living standards of workers should matter more than the economy.
Help the economy but need to be operated through consensus and democracy more than they are now.
Socialism is the best alternative.
@7WDP6PTIndependent2yrs2Y
Help, allows the workers to unite against the mistreatment of their employer and demand equal rights
Help, and increase union membership, empower union rank-and-file while investigating and limiting the powers of union leaders and bureaucrats.
Labor Unions will affect the economy in same way, but I believe that's an effect of the workers not being treated correctly, and it's a consequence of the company
Help the economy because the working class gains power
It may hurt the economy but keep them
Not enough knowledge on the subject, nor the research to conclude a decisive answer.
doesn’t matter, workers rights are more important than the economy
Doesn’t matter, they are necessary to preserve workers’ rights.
Help, but if done to promote socialism instead of communism.
