A sweeping global study has found that children who receive smartphones before age 13 are at significantly higher risk for mental health problems later in life.
The research, which surveyed nearly 2 million people across more than 160 countries, links early smartphone ownership to increased rates of depression, suicidal thoughts, aggression, low self-worth, and behavioral issues. The risks are especially pronounced for girls and are exacerbated by early exposure to social media. Experts urge parents to delay giving smartphones to children and warn that excessive screen time can disrupt sleep, social development, and emotional regulation.
The findings have sparked calls for stricter age limits and greater parental awareness about the dangers of early smartphone use.
