A sweeping global study has found that giving children smartphones before the age of 13 is strongly associated with increased risks of mental health issues later in life, including suicidal thoughts, aggression, low self-worth, and behavioral changes.
Researchers surveyed nearly 2 million people across more than 160 countries and consistently found that early smartphone ownership correlates with poorer mental health outcomes in early adulthood. The risks are particularly pronounced for girls and are linked to increased screen time and social media exposure.
Experts are urging parents to delay giving smartphones to children and calling for policies to restrict access for those under 13. The findings highlight the urgent need for safer digital environments and greater awareness of the developmental dangers posed by early and excessive screen use.
