The Sri Lankan government has initiated a major operation to reclaim and protect tank (reservoir) reserves from illegal occupation and encroachment.
Surveys and re-demarcation of tank boundaries have begun, particularly in the Anuradhapura region, to ensure proper management and conservation of these vital water resources. The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation, K.D. Lal Kantha, emphasized that no exceptions will be made, including for properties owned by prominent businessmen. This move follows public criticism over previous attempts to use tank bunds for tourism development.
The government aims to restore the integrity of tank lands and prevent further unauthorized use.
