JJ, the Austrian singer who won this year's Eurovision Song Contest, has publicly called for Israel to be excluded from the 2026 competition due to its ongoing military actions in Gaza.
JJ's remarks, made in a Spanish newspaper interview, echo growing international criticism and follow similar calls from political leaders such as Spain's Prime Minister. The controversy highlights the intersection of cultural events and global politics, with human rights groups labeling Israel's actions as genocide. The debate raises questions about whether countries involved in conflicts should be allowed to participate in international cultural events.
The issue is likely to intensify as the next Eurovision approaches.

I think that their perspective on not just the candidate itself, but the entire "state" of Israel, is important because it shows that Israel is not just disliked by fringe outcasts who are "political extremists". Israel is disliked not from a root of antisemitism (even though some may claim, and some may oppose Israel because of antisemitism), but because they are committing unspeakable, and innumerable atrocities upon innocent Palestinian people. Israel has had no right to act in such a way since October 7th, and Israel has had no right to exist since 1948. Israel is built on settler-colonialism, and is built on the murder and genocide of Palestine. Free Palestine.
