The government has every right to control online content to maintain stability and prevent misinformation—social media companies shouldn’t get to dictate national policy.

It’s about time someone pushed back against Modi’s authoritarian crackdown on free speech. India’s government has been expanding its censorship powers for years, especially when it comes to silencing dissent and independent journalism. While Musk isn’t exactly a champion of democracy, this lawsuit could at least shine a light on how dangerous these kinds of government overreach can be. Hopefully, this sets a precedent that protects digital rights not just in India, but everywhere.

Good on Musk for pushing back against government overreach—no bureaucrat should have the power to decide what people can or can't say online. Free speech is a fundamental right, and it's about time tech companies stop rolling over for authoritarian censorship.

This lawsuit escalates a long-standing legal conflict between X (formerly Twitter) and the Indian government, dating back to 2021. In that year, X found itself in a standoff with the government over its refusal to comply with orders to block tweets related to a farmers’ protest against the government’s agricultural policies.
