Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe has been elected as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), making history as the first woman and first African to hold the position.
The 41-year-old former Olympic swimmer won the election in a secret ballot during the 144th IOC Session in Greece. Coventry, who also serves as Zimbabwe’s sports minister, will lead the organization for an eight-year term. Her election marks a significant step toward greater diversity and representation in global sports leadership.
She succeeds Thomas Bach, who has led the IOC since 2013.
