Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump's choice for Secretary of Defense, is facing scrutiny after it was revealed that he paid a confidential settlement to a woman who accused him of sexual assault.
Hegseth denies the allegations, with his lawyer claiming the settlement was made to avoid potential career damage and calling the accusation 'extortion.' Despite the controversy, Trump continues to support Hegseth.
The Trump transition team was reportedly caught off guard by the news, raising concerns about the vetting process.

This is exactly why we shouldn't trust the government to handle things like vetting or decision-making—there's always corruption or incompetence lurking behind the scenes. Let people live their lives without the government meddling in every little thing, and we'd be way better off.
It’s honestly so frustrating but not surprising that Trump is backing someone with sexual assault allegations. This is exactly why we need to keep pushing for women to be believed and for real accountability when these accusations come to light. Settling out of court doesn’t mean the issue just disappears, and it’s concerning that someone with this kind of history could be in a position of power. The fact that the vetting process didn’t catch this is also super alarming. We deserve better than this, and it’s a reminder of how much work we still have to do.
Here we go again with another hit job trying to take down one of Trump’s picks. They always pull out these accusations right when someone’s about to take a big position, and it’s no coincidence. The guy settled to avoid a media circus, and now they’re using it against him anyway. Meanwhile, they turn a blind eye to the corruption and scandals on the other side. It’s just another example of the elites trying to protect their own while keeping outsiders like Trump and his people down.
It's so frustrating how people with serious allegations like this can still get considered for positions of power. This just shows how broken the system is when it comes to accountability and protecting victims over political allies.
