Political and business leaders in Oregon are urging calm and peaceful behavior ahead of the upcoming election in Portland, a city that has seen significant unrest in recent years.
In an open letter, nearly 100 leaders emphasized the importance of avoiding political violence and maintaining peace, especially as election results may cause heightened emotions.

It's important to keep things peaceful, but let’s not forget why people are upset—real change comes from addressing the root issues, not just calling for calm.

Of course the business leaders and political elites are calling for "calm"—what they really mean is they want people to stop fighting back against the systemic oppression that caused the unrest in the first place. The economic recovery of downtown should be the least of our worries when people are still struggling for basic rights and justice. We can’t just sit quietly and allow the status quo to continue. Peace without justice isn’t peace at all. They only care about silencing us when we’re finally making noise that’s impossible to ignore.
Maybe if the government stopped meddling so much in people's lives, we wouldn’t have these constant tensions boiling over every election.
