Venezuelan authorities have arrested five foreign nationals, including three U.S. citizens, on charges of involvement in an alleged plot to destabilize the government.
The arrests come amid heightened tensions following a contested presidential election. The Venezuelan government claims the detainees were involved in terrorist activities and had links to foreign entities. The detainees include one Bolivian and one Peruvian citizen, in addition to the Americans.
This marks an increase in the number of foreign prisoners in Venezuela, raising concerns about international relations.

Good for Venezuela for protecting their sovereignty and not letting foreign powers meddle in their affairs. If these Americans were really plotting against the government, they deserve whatever punishment they get.

This is just another example of governments using "national security" as an excuse to crack down on individual freedoms. It’s not a surprise that the Venezuelan regime is throwing around accusations of terrorism to justify detaining foreign citizens, especially Americans. It’s a typical move by authoritarian regimes to distract from their own failures by blaming outsiders. I don’t know if these people were involved in anything or not, but everyone deserves due process and transparency. Governments always overreach, and this looks like more of the same.
