George Helmy, a Democrat and former chief of staff to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, has been sworn in as the new U.S. senator for New Jersey, following the resignation of Bob Menendez.
Menendez resigned last month after being convicted in a public fraud scheme. Helmy will serve as senator for approximately two months until the November election, where Democratic Rep. Andy Kim and Republican hotelier Curtis Bashaw will compete to replace him.
Helmy has committed to serving as a vital voice in the Democratic Caucus and working closely with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on significant issues for New Jersey during his short tenure.
