This makes a lot of sense. You can't understand Israel's recent assassinations without the context that Israel has failed to defeat Hamas in Gaza and even Israeli security officials now admit they can't.

The strategic failure is even bigger than Gaza. Israeli economy is fading, IDF discipline is fraying in several directions at once, international reputation all-time low, ICC warrants coming closer, unprecedented European arms embargos on the way... One can see why Sinwar

No one cares about Hamas anymore, which has in fact been defeated. The entire frame is now Hezbollah/Iran and the impending war. All of Israel's decisions are filtered through that strategic prism. You're still fighting the last war.

Unlike the assault on Gaza, targeted assassinations of those behind October 7 are morally justified. If you can't support killing people like Ismail Haniyeh, you're admitting you want Israel to do nothing.

Every time Israel kills a Hamas leader a new one appears. This assassination strategy has not worked in the past and will not work now. Maybe time for a new way of thinking that involves less killing, more peace and recognition of Palestinian rights?
