Maduro’s close allies Russia, China, Iran and Cuba hailed his victory while the US, the EU and the UK demanded to see a detailed breakdown of voting.
Regional power Brazil is attempting to mediate between Maduro and the opposition.
On Monday, protesters marched across Caracas towards the centre of the capital and the Miraflores presidential palace. Many were carrying Venezuelan flags and some had their faces masked and were carrying large wooden sticks. Police responded by firing tear gas in some areas, sending large clouds of smoke into the afternoon sky.
In Santa Capilla, a few blocks from the palace, men in plain clothes were firing live ammunition from pistols towards demonstrators, according to videos shared on social media.
In cities across the country, unrest spilled on to the streets. Video shared on social media showed protesters in the town of Coro, in north-western Venezuela, toppling a statue of Maduro’s predecessor and mentor, Hugo Chávez, as crowds cheered them on. Maduro had called Sunday’s election on what would have been Chávez’s 70th birthday.

Maybe the west should intervene, in the name of freedom. And start another forever war.

It would be much better if, for once, there would we a regional response. If the whole of LatAm finds it so awful, then those countries need to up their own sanctions and boycotts and motivate regime change to deal with the resulting migrant wave.
@AmusedDemocraticForward2yrs2Y
I can’t imagine that will help. Venezuela’s principal export is oil, which has a global market. If you wanna hit Maduro where it hurts, transition to Solar.
@ThrusheKayleeRepublican2yrs2Y
One can only hope that the people shred Maduro limb from limb and hoist his severed head from the presidential palace.
@HushedMeerkatGreen2yrs2Y
And what of the Israeli genocide supporting leaders of the West? Surely they deserve medieval punishments, as do their supporters and all who are arming and encouraging the killers of thousands of children - something simply unforgivable.
@Bl4ckBoxHeronGreen2yrs2Y
US forcefully takes over Citgo
Places sanctions on Venezuela
Uses money from Citgo to fund destabilizing ops by the opposition
Opposition composed of western backed weak leaders
Bring about collective punishment against Venezuelans
Creates massive death and destruction
As in Syria and now Mali (by France), funds extremism and violence
A large percentage of population leaves (as in Syria and Libya)
But despite all that Maduro - a great leader for the people - stands strong.
The spirit of Che Guevara lives in South America. March to freedom continues in the face of imperialism. Maduro, the George Washington of Venezuela rocks!!!
PS: So when Trump refuses to accept the election results, he’s a traitor. When Edmundo González does the same, he’s a hero for the neocons
@SoreS3nateRepublican2yrs2Y
Washington enslaved 577 people and chained America to the imperialist oppression of an oligarchy of upper-class English expats. Maduro has enslaved 28 million and chained his nation to Russian fascist tyrrany.
